Castor Oil Market Overview & Value Chain Analysis
Castor Oil Market Overview & Value Chain Analysis
Global demand for castor oil and its derivatives continued to grow steadily in 2025, supported by rising consumption across cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, coatings and specialty chemicals. Castor oil, extracted from the seeds of Ricinus communis, remains a critical bio-based feedstock for industries seeking renewable and multifunctional raw materials.
Production remains concentrated in India, which accounts for more than 90 percent of global castor oil output and exports. Castor seeds are cultivated across tropical regions including India, Thailand, Pakistan, Myanmar, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Vietnam. Beyond seed extraction, castor leaves are used in silkworm cultivation in China, roots in traditional medicines, and stems in paper and board manufacturing.
Industrial applications continue to diversify. Castor oil’s role in cosmetics and personal care is expanding due to rising global demand for natural and “green” formulations, while ricinoleic acid–rich feed products are gaining traction in the animal nutrition sector. At the same time, raw material price volatility and water scarcity in key growing regions remain major constraints for farmers and downstream processors.
The castor oil value chain is supported by aggregators and intermediaries who supply large processors, including major Indian producers such as Adani Wilmar, Jayant Agro, and Gokul Agri. Castor oil is further processed into hydrogenated castor oil, sebacic acid and ricinoleic acid—essential intermediates for lubricants, polyamides, plasticizers and coatings. Notably, Cathay Biotech remains the only global producer of bio-fermented sebacic acid.
Market size estimates for 2025 indicate stable expansion across the segment:

Consumption patterns remain geographically concentrated. Asia accounts for around 50 percent of global demand, with China the world’s largest importer. Europe is the second-largest consuming region, led by Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom and Belgium. North America ranks third, with the United States representing roughly 90 percent of regional usage.
Supply expansion continues among major producers. AWL Agri Business, Jayant Agro-Organics, NK Industries, Gokul Agro Resources and Gokul Agri International remain the world’s top castor oil manufacturers, while leading derivative producers include Aurorium, Itoh Oil Chemicals, Arkema and Sebacic Oman.
