It undergoes hydrogenation in the presence of a palladium catalyst and subsequent oxidation to yield hydrogen peroxide, with the 2-EAQ being recycled.

For a typical production capacity of 100,000 tons of 27.5% hydrogen peroxide, the most widely used formulation requires approximately 140 tons of 2-EAQ combined with 250 tons of Trioctyl Phosphate. An alternative common formulation utilizes 140 tons of 2-EAQ, 160 tons of Trioctyl Phosphate, and 90 tons of Tetrabutyl Urea.

China currently stands as the world's largest producer, consumer, and exporter of 2-Ethylanthraquinone. The report notes that major global chemical entities, such as Solvay, source 2-EAQ from Chinese manufacturers for their own hydrogen peroxide production and for distribution to other manufacturers.
