The global market for high-performance optical resins is currently undergoing a significant transformation driven by technological advancements and shifting supply chains. According to the latest market monitoring data from HDIN Research, the global market size for Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) and Cyclic Olefin Polymer (COP) has reached between 0.8 billion USD and 1.2 billion USD in 2025. Fueled by critical applications in medical healthcare, semiconductors, and consumer electronics, the market is forecasted to maintain a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.8% to 6.8% through 2030.

Cyclic Olefin Copolymers (COC) and Polymers (COP) are amorphous, high-grade thermoplastics distinguished by their superior optical properties. They offer high transparency, low birefringence, excellent heat resistance, and low water absorption. While both materials utilize Norbornene (NB) monomers, their synthesis differs: COP is typically produced via ring-opening metathesis polymerization followed by hydrogenation, whereas COC involves the copolymerization of Norbornene with olefins (primarily ethylene) using metallocene catalysts. Although COP production is generally more complex and costly, it often delivers marginally superior optical performance.

Surging Demand Across High-Tech Sectors
The unique material properties of COC/COP have made them indispensable in several cutting-edge industries:

In Consumer Electronics, the materials are standard for high-precision optics. Applications include smartphone camera lenses, photosensitive components for projection systems, polarization protection films, and display films. notably, the rise of AR/VR/MR devices has spurred demand for lightweight, high-clarity lenses. Additionally, their low dielectric loss makes them suitable for mobile device antennas (5G/6G applications).

The Medical and Healthcare sector utilizes these resins for their purity and biocompatibility. They are extensively used in pre-filled syringes, vaccine vials, blood storage containers, microtiter plates, and blister packaging for pharmaceuticals, replacing glass to reduce breakage and maintain drug stability.

In the Automotive industry, the push for autonomous driving has increased the need for vehicle camera lenses and Head-Up Display (HUD) components that can withstand high temperatures and environmental stress.

The Semiconductor sector relies on COC/COP for the transport and storage of silicon wafers. Front Opening Unified Pods (FOUP) and Front Opening Shipping Boxes (FOSB) made from these materials minimize outgassing and particle contamination, which is critical for advanced node manufacturing.

A Shift in the Global Competitive Landscape
For decades, the global supply of COC and COP has been concentrated among a few major players in Japan and Germany. Polyplastics Co. Ltd., through its German subsidiary TOPAS Advanced Polymers GmbH, remains the global leader with a capacity of 50,000 tons. Zeon Corporation, based in Japan, operates a combined capacity of 41,600 tons for its ZEONEX and ZEONOR lines, with a confirmed plan to expand to 54,000 tons by 2028. Other established players include JSR Corporation (ARTON) and Mitsui Chemicals (APEL), both of which produce Norbornene monomers for captive use.

However, the period from 2023 to 2025 has marked a turning point. Chinese chemical manufacturers have successfully broken through technical barriers, initiating a "capacity explosion" that is reshaping market dynamics. As supply increases, the industry anticipates a downward trend in prices, which will likely accelerate mass adoption in cost-sensitive applications.

Key developments in the emerging supply chain include:
Topolefin Technology Quzhou Co Ltd has established itself as a major new player. Following the commissioning of its Phase I plant in September 2023, the company began trial runs for Phase II in July 2025. This expansion adds 7,000 tons of COC and 6,000 tons of Norbornene capacity, with full commercial operations expected in 2026. The company has outlined a long-term roadmap to reach a total capacity of 61,000 tons.

Wuxi Acryl Technology Co. Ltd. launched its  COC project in July 2025, part of a strategic plan to eventually reach 30,000 tons of capacity for COC and its monomer.

Liaoning Luhua Hongjin New Material Technology Co. Ltd. brought a 1,000-ton unit online in January 2024 and plans to scale up to 10,000 tons based on market demand.

Sinopec (Tianjin) Petrochemical Co. Ltd. officially filed its project for 850 tons of Norbornene and 1,000 tons of COC in October 2025, signaling the entry of state-owned giants into the sector.

Wanhua Chemical Group unveiled its proprietary COC/COP materials in 2024, targeting optical and medical packaging applications, with an integrated production line currently under construction.
