Supercapacitor Market Reaches 2.8-3.2 Billion USD in 2025; AI Data Centers and M&A Activity Accelerate Growth

According to the latest monitoring data from HDIN Research, the global supercapacitor market size is estimated to be between 2.8 billion and 3.2 billion USD in 2025. Fueled by booming demand in data center energy storage and grid modernization, the market is projected to grow rapidly, maintaining a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17% to 19% from 2025 to 2030.

Technology Evolution: From EDLC to Hybrid Solutions
Supercapacitors, also known as electrochemical capacitors, bridge the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries. While Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) have historically dominated sectors like wind power—with Maxwell Technologies as a traditional leader—the industry is witnessing a technological pivot.

Lithium-ion Hybrid Supercapacitors (LIC), which combine the longevity of supercapacitors with the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, are emerging as the preferred solution for next-generation data centers. This shift is driven by the need for Critical Energy Storage Systems (CESS) in high-performance computing.

Major Acquisition: Clarios Acquires Maxwell
The competitive landscape shifted significantly in late 2025. On November 12, 2025, battery giant Clarios announced the acquisition of supercapacitor manufacturer Maxwell Technologies. This strategic move is expected to integrate Maxwell's ultracapacitor technology into Clarios's broad automotive and energy storage portfolio, further consolidating the market.

The Race for AI Data Center Dominance
The explosive growth of AI computing has created a new battleground for supercapacitor manufacturers. Japanese firm Musashi Energy Solutions and Chinese manufacturer Nantong Jianghai are at the forefront of the Lithium-ion Capacitor (LIC/HSC) market.

Musashi Energy Solutions has partnered with Flex to supply CESS, with its Hybrid Supercapacitor (HSC) product becoming a standard component in the Nvidia GB300 series. While Musashi's 2024 capacity at its Hokuto plant was limited to 200,000 units annually, the company has initiated an aggressive expansion plan. It aims to increase capacity to 6.5 million units per year by 2026 following the completion of a new facility. Supply of CESS via the Flex partnership is expected to commence in Q3 2025.

Conversely, Nantong Jianghai currently holds a significant capacity advantage. The company boasts a daily production capacity of 10,000 LIC units, translating to an annual capacity of 3 to 4 million units—exceeding Musashi's current output. Leveraging long-term partnerships with power supply leaders like Delta Electronics and Flex Ltd., Nantong Jianghai reported supercapacitor revenues of 32 million USD in 2024.

Regional Dynamics and Standardization
China remains a pivotal market and manufacturing hub. In July 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) approved the proposal for "Supercapacitors for Electrical Energy Storage" initiated by China. This marks the first international standard specifically for supercapacitors in power storage applications.

Domestically, the application structure of the Chinese supercapacitor market is diverse: Energy and other sectors account for the majority at 50.6%, followed by the transportation sector at 30.5%, and the industrial sector at 18.9%.
