Acrylic Acid Industry Chain Enters Bottoming Out Phase in 2026, Pivoting to Technology Premium and Green Compliance

Date : 2026-01-19 Reading : 1179
HDIN Research, a leading independent market consulting firm, has released its latest analysis on the global Acrylic Acid (AA) industry. The report identifies 2026 as a critical bottoming out year for the sector, characterized by the digestion of excess capacity and the shutdown of high-cost facilities. HDIN Research highlights that the industrys future competitive landscape will no longer be defined by scale expansion but will shift decisively toward Technology Premium and Green Compliance.

The analysis indicates that while global capacity, particularly in China, has reached a saturation point, a structural reshaping is underway. Producers are moving away from general-purpose price wars to focus on process innovation, high-purity monomers, and low-carbon solutions to navigate new trade barriers like the European Unions Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Technological Revolution: The Propane One-Step Oxidation
A major focal point of the HDIN Research report is the disruption of raw material pathways. Traditional production relies on a two-step propylene oxidation method. However, the industry is witnessing a breakthrough with the industrialization of the Propane One-Step Direct Oxidation process.

This innovative method utilizes cheaper propane to directly synthesize acrylic acid, bypassing the intermediate propylene stage. This shortens the process flow, significantly reduces energy consumption, and lowers equipment investment. Companies such as Ningbo Changhong and Keyuan are currently advancing the industrialization of this technology, which is expected to fundamentally alter the global cost curve.

High-End Segmentation: The Race for Purity
As profit margins for basic-grade products hit historical lows, HDIN Research observes a strategic pivot toward high-value segments. Manufacturers capable of producing Ultra-High Purity monomers are commanding significant premiums.

The report highlights two key growth areas:
1. Electronic Grade Acrylic Acid: Critical for semiconductor photoresists and precision displays, this segment is supported by government policies in major manufacturing hubs aiming for supply chain localization.
2. Medical Grade Monomers: With purity requirements exceeding 99.99%, these monomers command prices up to three times higher than standard products, driven by the demanding specifications of the medical and hygiene sectors.

Green Transition and Bio-based Innovation
With the EU CBAM set to operationalize fully in 2026, carbon footprint has become a trade barrier. HDIN Research notes that leading global players are responding with bio-based alternatives. Notably, firms like LG Chem are advancing the 3HP fermentation method to produce 100% plant-based acrylic acid. These bio-based products offer high premium potential in the high-end cosmetics and sanitary markets. Simultaneously, the integration of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies is becoming a standard for reducing carbon tariffs.
